Weather conditions have grounded many U.S. Forest Service planes trying to map and analyze the California wildfires, so an unmanned NASA drone with new thermal-imaging sensors has been pressed into service to find hot spots and track the fires' spread, Technology Review is reporting, along with a photo gallery.
NASA's Ikhana, a Predator B drone, took off yesterday on its first 10-hour mission, flying over seven of the dozen fires. Similar flights were scheduled for today and tomorrow.
